The Middle Class!

The middle class as a social entity began to rise to prominence during the renaissance period. Copying their betters, the middle class attempted to emulate the style and line of the upper classes, but with humbler fabrics. It would not be unusual to see a merchant's wife in a high-necked bodice and farthingale with over and underskirts; made from simple linen or fine wool, these garments were beautiful and sensible. Her lace may not be as fine or sumptuous as a noble lady's, but she wears it nonetheless. The merchant would be wearing a handsome ensemble with lots of black and the fanciest fabric that he could afford.
